Angel Cabrera always cut a distinctive figure on the golf course, but he will be a notable absentee from the 2022 US Open.

He was affectionately known as El Pato (the duck) because of his waddling gait, a stocky frame, and was usually followed by a plume of cigarette smoke.

Despite winning the 2007 US Open, he would not have been eligible to enter the field, but likely been involved in the pageantry of the major.

However, sitting in a prison cell in his homeland Argentina made that a little difficult.

Coming from a humble background, with his father a handyman and mother a maid, he was raised by his grandmother from around the age of four.

At 10, he became a caddy at the Córdoba Country Club and learned to play golf among the other caddies for money.

He caught the eye of a local property magnate, who bought Cabrera his first set of clubs when he was 16.

Cabrera turned professional in 1989, but did not qualify as a member of the European Tour until 1996, at the fourth attempt.

He was a consistent performer and won the Argentine Open in 2001 and in 2005 claimed the 2005 BMW Championship.

The best moment of his career was yet to come, though, as he won the 2007 US Open by one shot, ahead of Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk.

When speaking about his victory, Cabrera said: "Well, there are some players that have psychologists, some have sportologists, I smoke.”

It was often very rare to see Cabrera without a cigarette in hand out on the golf course, famously smoking on every hole.

The Argentine can count himself as a two-time major winner as in 2009 he won a three-way play-off, against Kenny Perry and Chad Campbell to win the Masters.

Augusta was the place where Cabrera enjoyed much of his major success, finishing seventh in 2011, before then losing a play-off to Adam Scott in 2013.

The last career win for him came in 2014 at the Greenbrier Classic and his performances steadily declined.

His fall from grace took an even sharper turn in 2021 when he found himself arrested on domestic assault charges.

The 52-year-old was initially arrested in Brazil and then extradited to Argentina so he could face charges.

He was found guilty of for assaulting, threatening and harassing Cecilia Torres Mana, his partner between 2016 and 2018, and sentenced to two years in prison.

Cabrera denied any wrongdoing, but, according to reports, Torres Mana is one of three women who filed charges against Cabrera. His former wife, Silva Rivadero, and former partner Micaela Escudero were the others.

While the good and the great of the golf world battle it out for the US Open at Brookline this week, one of its former winners will be sitting in a prison cell.
