Are McDonald's snack wraps coming back?

McDonald's fan-favorite item is sort-of coming back, but not anytime soon.

On Wednesday, December 6, 2023, McDonald's announced that it plans to "aggressively" expand its chicken offerings, now on par with its beef options.

The fast food chain wants to focus on items like their McNuggets, McChicken, McSpicy, and McCrispy.

On its website, McDonald's describes the McCrispy as a "southern-style fried chicken sandwich," topped with "crinkle-cut pickles and served on a toasted, buttered potato roll."

One of their plans is to expand their McCrispy sandwich into two unique styles, including chicken tenders and wraps.

While both options sound equally delicious, the fast food chain will likely garner more publicity for its decision to bring back snack wraps, a fan-favorite item.

McDonald's also noted that the snack wrap likely won't hit US stores until 2025, which means customers will have to wait at least one year to get their hands on a wrap.

Not all fans are pleased with the decision, with many voicing their concerns on social media.

Many snack wrap enthusiasts took to X, formerly Twitter, to share their thoughts on the upcoming McCrispy wraps.

One user tweeted: "@McDonalds why is it going to take an entire YEAR for you to bring back snack wraps ????? I'm confused..."

Another wrote: "Bring back the OG snack wraps not these McCrispy bull****s you clowns."

One user lamented that the new wraps likely wouldn't taste as good as the original, noting: "I'm calling it now: the new #McDonalds snack wraps are going to suck compared to the old ones."

They added: "McCrispy and Buttermilk Crispy Chicken are not the same at all. McCrispy is cheaper, less crispy, and less flavorful."

"@McDonalds would be wise to bring back the good chicken," they concluded.

When did McDonald's get rid of snack wraps?

The McDonald's snack wrap was first introduced back in 2006.

It quickly became a fan-favorite, with customers purchasing one or more wraps, either to eat as a snack as intended, or as part of a larger meal.

The McDonald's snack wrap consisted of 100% white meat chicken breast, available crispy or grilled, lettuce, shredded cheddar jack and Monterey Jack cheese, wrapped in a soft flour tortilla.

Customers could also customize the wrap with their sauce of choice, including ranch, honey mustard, or salsa roja.

By 2016, the snack wrap disappeared from McDonald's menu, which the fast food giant stressed was due to underwhelming sales.

However, current and former workers alleged that the item was too time-consuming and complicated to make compared to what it cost.

While some individual franchises could still choose to make and sell the snack wraps, by early 2020, they were removed nationwide.

McDonald's simplified its menu across the US due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The snack wrap seems to have only been discontinued in America, with the chain still offering both crispy and grilled chicken snack wraps at select locations worldwide, including Canada and the United Kingdom.

The chain sells both snack wraps and a slightly larger version of the item, called the McWrap.

One non-American user, Lorien Gugich, sparked jealousy nationwide with her tweet, a photo of various wrap options available at a presumably international McDonald's location.

She asked: "So you're telling me US McDonalds doesn't have snack wraps or mcwraps?"

One of the users responding to her tweet said: "This hurt my soul so much," a sentiment many Americans could relate to.

What is CosMc's?

McDonald's also revealed that it plans to open an additional 10,000 restaurants across the globe by 2027.

The fast food giant already has 40,000 stores worldwide.

The 10,000 new stores will include 900 locations in the US and 1,900 locations in Canada, Germany, the UK, and Australia.

McDonald's is also opening up a new chain, CosMc's, aimed to compete against beverage and breakfast giants Dunkin' and Starbucks.

The first, and currently only, CosMc's had a grand opening on Thursday, December 7, in Bolingbrook, Illinois.

The chain's location is about 45 minutes outside of Chicago.

McDonald's CEO told investors that the rationale for opening the new chain is the increased demand for an "afternoon beverage pick-me-up occasion."

McDonald's is also planning on opening nine additional CosMc's in Texas as part of its trial run.

While CosMc's may not have all of McDonald's famous menu items on its menu, the chain will offer McFlurries and select breakfast sandwiches, including the Egg, Sausage, and Bacon McMuffins.

The chain is also offering unique beverages, including Signature Galactic Boosts, iced teas, lemonades, slushes, and frappés.

Regular and specialty coffees will also be sold at the drive-thru-only chain, aiming to allow customers to purchase and receive their items ASAP.

CosMc's will also offer desserts, like cookies, brownies, ice cream sundaes, cones, and shakes.
