In the history of the NFL, only 16 players had publicly come out as gay or bisexual by September 2022, with Carl Nassib being the first active player to come out in 2021. Maxen’s decision to come out stems from his desire not to feel the need to conceal his personal life.
Maxen admitted that it was initially challenging for him to open up due to negative feelings about potential judgment from others. He attributed his ability to embrace his identity to the love and support he received from his family, friends, colleagues, and partner.
